Being an Interior Designer, I am always on the hunt for the best paint colors. I typically tend to lean towards neutrals for a few reasons.
- Blank Palette (A neutral wall color allows you to add pops of color without making the room too “loud”)
- Redesign made easy (If you are anything like me, you want to redesign your rooms as often as the seasons change – selecting a neutral paint color will save you time & money by only having to swap out accessories)
- Resale Value (Not everyone has the same taste as you and knowing that you are going to have to paint 4 coats to cover that bright blue wall could be a big turn off)
I want to keep this as simple as possible because selecting paint is one of the trickiest things when it comes to creating a space. When selecting a paint color, you first need to decide whether you would like your space to be “warm” or “cool”. To help clarify that, a “warm” space would include beige tones while a “cool” space will embrace gray tones.
Now, this is where you need to proceed with caution. When looking at a paint deck you have countless options when it comes to shades of gray or beige. It is important that you understand that every color has an undertone – a color that is present, but not always apparent depending on its surroundings. So what can you do in order to ensure your paint is truly the color you were hoping for?
- Make sure you are viewing the paint in the space you will be painting. Things such as natural lighting, artificial lighting and flooring will all contribute to achieving the perfect color.
- Hold the paint swatch up to a white background. This will help to identify what undertone is present.
- And the easiest option of them all, choose a color that was selected by a designer!
Lucky for you, I have done just that. All of the colors below are primarily “warm” or “cool” and they have an undertone of the opposing tone. I know that may sound confusing (and it is). For example, Worldly Gray is primarily a cool color (gray) and has an undertone of warm (beige) – the perfect greige (I promise I didn’t make that word up haha).
Here are my top 5 Sherwin Williams neutral paint colors:
1. SW7043 – Worldly Gray
(^I literally painted my WHOLE house this color – Check back for a future post on our home renovation!)
2. SW7015 – Repose Gray
3. SW7029 – Agreeable Gray
4. SW7614 – Collonade Gray
5. SW7044 – Amazing Gray
